Designing an Industrial style kitchen

If you love the industrial-style look, then you’ll love the concrete stone-effect ranges we have in our 2022 Nobilia collection. Or perhaps a luxurious and stylish black matt finish is more your style? Both will work superbly to extend the industrial style into your kitchen.

But firstly, let’s think about how you can create the industrial look throughout your home.

You don’t need to be living in a period property, have exposed brickwork, or be living in one of those fabulous warehouse apartments with high vaulted ceilings to create the industrial look. Properties of any age and style can be transformed with a bit of creativity.

Choosing the right colour palette

To create the industrial look you will need a neutral colour base, and you can then add accents of colour in artwork, tapware, textiles, rugs and crockery.

Try going with a base palette of neutral shades of whites, greys, stone to darker shades of grey, black and deep earthy colours. You can add warmth with wood and leather furniture and then add colour with soft furnishings and accessories. It will look amazing!

Be creative with your décor and furnishing

Industrial design is all about creativity, but it is simple, practical and makes use of materials that are available.

For example, shelving and furniture made of timber, with legs and brackets made from plumbing parts. Making use of bricks or concrete blocks to use as props such as bookends, or as a base for a low stool or table. Walls can be covered in wood panelling, or explore your options for using metallic paints or check out the fabulous wallcoverings available that look like natural wood stone or brickwork.

If you have exposed pipes, make them a feature. Many people choose to paint them white or the same colour as the walls to help them blend into the background, but be bold! These are features that you can enhance to help you create the look you are wanting to achieve. Choose a metal paint, either black or gunmetal to add interest.

Wood flooring is beautiful. It oozes warmth and style, but it comes at a price, so if natural wood floor is out of your price range, there are plenty of authentic laminate floor coverings on the market which cost substantially less. Concrete flooring can be given a polished finish to add style whilst still retaining hardwearing, anti-slip properties. Alternatively there is also an abundance of choice when it comes to vinyl floor coverings, a perfect low budget option to complete the look in the kitchen.

Extending your industrial colour palette into the kitchen

Consider how your colour palette will work with the different surfaces and features in your kitchen.

Shades of charcoal can be layered to give a textured look with high gloss stainless steel to reflect light.

Concrete or soft neutral shades like stone or beige can be used on walls or cabinet fronts to bring a softer, lighter feel to the room.

Materials that characterise industrial kitchens

The types of material and textures you use in your kitchen design will define it as industrial.

Glossy stainless-steel features will stand out against the raw backdrop. Or you could incorporate brushed steel, brass or polished copper.

Concrete stone-effect cabinets work well in industrial kitchens, as do matt black kitchens, or you could consider going for the metal-look and adding stainless steel kitchen doors.

Natural wood, stone or synthetic worktops can blend with a concrete-effect finish offset with stainless steel accessories.

Industrial-style kitchen accessories

Oversize industrial metal pendant lights or vintage pendant lights from commercial settings will accentuate the design.

Open shelves are another traditional industrial kitchen feature, along with overhead racks or hooks, hanging bars, wire rack storage, metal containers and thick wedge chopping boards.

Practical kitchen tools with an urban feel should be put on display. These may include stainless steel accessories or smaller appliances such as coffeemakers or pasta makers.
