Get Creative with Kitchen Space

Get creative with your kitchen space

Spring is in the air, and as the days get longer, we look at ways to freshen up our homes ready for the warmer weather.

As we all spend so much time in our kitchens, it’s not surprising that this is the room we turn to first, so see what improvements we can make. And there are many creative ways to transform the space you have.

Make your kitchen brighter

If your kitchen has become dull and lacklustre, it’s time to give it a makeover. Gleaming white tiles are a great way to lighten the walls and provide a surface that enhances natural light.

Splashbacks are a multifunctional alternative to tiles, and these panels can be placed behind the hob and sink to protect the wall from water, oil and heat damage. Vinyl splashbacks are versatile and offer a practical surface that’s heat resistance, hygienic, and easy to clean. They’re also a great way to bring a splash of colour to your kitchen.

Soft tones on the walls can further enhance your new, brighter kitchen. Pale misty greens, soft shades of blue or atmospheric grey will add to the feeling of harmony.

Change the focus of your lights

Lighting is something we often take for granted. But a few simple changes can transform the atmosphere of your kitchen.

For example, you may have a straightforward, single overhead light. But does this really illuminate the areas you use most?

By adding additional lighting, such as concealed spotlights and under cabinet strip lights, you have greater control over illuminating where you work.

To change the ambience of the kitchen, ornamental lamps can be placed by dining areas. Another attractive addition is soft glow LED mood lighting as it combines harmoniously with natural light, especially on late summer evenings.

Add a multi-purpose kitchen island

Less formal than a table, an island is a highly versatile addition to any kitchen. You’ll find that family and friends will gravitate to the high surface, and it becomes a handy place to chat over coffee, play games or do homework.

You can configure the island to suit your kitchen space – and you can opt to have chairs and stools on just one side or both.

Another benefit of an island is that it can act as an extra food preparation zone, when you need it. Plus, you can make use of the space underneath for storage.

Your island could become the centrepiece of your kitchen. Or it can be used as a dividing line between the working side of your kitchen and the social, relaxing side.

Lose the clutter

Your kitchen can look cluttered when appliances take over your work surfaces. It’s a common complaint that there’s never enough worktop space for food preparation.

Fitting additional cabinets or rows of open shelves is a solution to this problem. By bringing in extra storage space, you can move all those appliances, jars and utensils from your worksurfaces and give yourself more room.

Pots, pans and items of crockery can be placed on open shelves where they’re in easy reach, but away from your work area.
