Kitchen Colour Scheme

Use colour to make your kitchen more personal

Colour is a great way to put your individual stamp on your kitchen design.

It could be bright and bold or subtle and sophisticated – whatever you choose, it will make your kitchen design personal to you.

A natural green canvas

Green represents nature, new growth and harmony. It’s a popular choice for two reasons.

First, green is known for its calming properties. If you want your kitchen to be a relaxing and tranquil place, then check out the green colour charts.

The other reason green is so popular is because it works well as a neutral backdrop. Soft shades of green create an appealing canvas that can be accented with copper accessories in a traditional cottage style kitchen or with stainless steel in a more contemporary setting.

Natural greens blend perfectly with dark wood units and worktops to give a timeless, rustic quality. If you want something bolder, sage or forest greens can be used to make a statement or to highlight white or bleached wood cabinets.

If you find these darker shades too overpowering for the whole kitchen, just use them on a feature wall and use a pale shade on the other walls.

Dramatic greys

Grey is another neutral colour that provides a classic backdrop for kitchen units. Grey can be used in one shade or two-tone designs with either a bright contrasting colour such as pink or in a monotone colour palette.

Dark grey produces a dramatic, stormy effect – and it’s also a handy solution for covering up any imperfections on walls. It can be coupled with a softer, misty grey to tone down the dark mood.

Urban concrete

Still on-trend in contemporary kitchens, concrete offers the ultimate chic when it comes to urban design. It gives a minimalist look to a busy, working space.

Concrete can be used to instantly modernise a kitchen, bringing not just colour but a feel of texture to a design. As the colour of raw construction material, concrete is a perfect match for stainless steel accessories. The gloss of steel stands out against a matt concrete background.

Classic and Mediterranean blues

Navy and midnight blue are often used in classic, more formal kitchen designs. However, teal has also been making an eye-catching appearance in recent years.

Teal encompasses both blue and green, offering the natural qualities of green but in a highly distinctive colour.

For a Mediterranean feel, brighter blues can be coupled with glossy white units to give the feeling of open skies and endless summer days.

Sunny yellows and whites

Young children love the brightness of yellow as it feels happy and energetic. Sunshine lifts the spirits, and yellow is the perfect colour for sunny family kitchens.

White accents will make it feel clean and fresh, or you can blend with off-white or ivory for a light, delicate touch.

Wicker furniture works well with this colour scheme as it creates a laid back, informal setting, ideal if you have young children.
