Fitting a new kitchen

Make your new kitchen your summer DIY project

If you are one of those people who likes to keep busy, and you enjoy DIY, then you will likely be itching to get your teeth into a new project.

Fitting a new kitchen yourself is a rewarding experience, but not only that, it can save you money and gives you more control over your project.

Depending on the size and complexity of the design, kitchen fitters charge anything from £1,000 to £5,000, so even if you don’t feel confident to do all the work, if you have basic DIY skills, you could make a significant cost saving by doing some of it yourself.

Planning your new kitchen

Budget is an important factor with any home improvement project, so it’s best to be realistic from the outset on what you can achieve for your budget.

Once you have a budget in mind, the next decision to make is what changes you want to make to your existing kitchen. Do you want to reconfigure your existing kitchen to create a more efficient space, or do you want to keep the units and appliances in the same place and just give the kitchen a makeover?

Replacing old for new is going to be the cheapest option, and the easiest to install, but if you have more budget and are looking to reconfigure your existing layout, then you will need to carefully plan your new kitchen by taking accurate measurements and getting some drawings made up that you can work from when it comes to fitting your kitchen.

Measuring up

You will need to measure all the walls, windows, doors, ceiling height and anything that is fixed in the space such as a boiler. Once you have all these dimensions, you can use our online planner to map out your kitchen and use it to get ideas and inspiration, all in the comfort of your own home.

Our Online Kitchen Design Service

If you need some help creating a design for your kitchen, German Kitchen Store offers a Kitchen Design Service. We will use your measurements to create fully rendered, true-to-life images in the door range of your choice so you can see exactly how your kitchen will look. We will send you the initial design within 72 hours and you can make as many changes as you wish.

Timeline and ordering

Once you have finalised your kitchen design you will need to set out a timeline of events for your project.

If you are using professional tradespeople to assist you with some of the work, you will need to co-ordinate them to fit in with the delivery timings of the new kitchen. Our kitchens are generally delivered within 5 weeks, and we can confirm expected delivery date at time of order.

It will likely take this time to get any building work, re-plastering and decorating completed and to install new flooring/lighting and appliances. This is where your project management skills will come into play to maintain a smooth work process so everything is ready for the day your kitchen arrives.
