Sociable family kitchen

Create a sociable family space in your kitchen

Everyone in your household is likely to pass through the kitchen at least a few times during the day.

By creating a sociable space, you can ensure your family spends more time together in relaxed and comfortable surroundings – instead of heading straight out of the door!

Open up the room

Nowadays, kitchens are more than just places to cook. The modern family kitchen is used for working, reading, doing homework and eating and drinking – often at the same time.

If you have a separate dining room and kitchen, you may find this leads to family members eating separately. For a more fluid family hub, try combining the rooms and forming one large family space. This way, everyone can congregate and do different activities in the same room.

You can design your kitchen so it will accommodate different types of activity and allow family members to engage with each other whatever they’re doing. While you’re cooking, you can still chat to the kids doing their homework or your partner watching tv.

Allow sufficient space for everyone

A big problem in a family kitchen is that inevitably someone wants to be in the same place as someone else at the same time. By purposely leaving an empty workspace, it makes it easy for you to prepare drinks by the kettle while someone else is cooking food.

A specific area for making hot drinks works well. By having kettles, coffeemakers and mugs all in one space with seating nearby, you can encourage your family to take breaks together. This can be made more enticing if you spice it up with different types of teas and all the accessories for cappuccinos, expressos and lattes.

Plan an informal eating place

Usually kids just want to grab a drink or snack and head out of the door. By installing a breakfast bar or kitchen island, you give them somewhere informal to sit.

In contrast to the formal setting of a dining table and chairs, an island or bar allows them to simply hop up onto a stool.

A kitchen island is a multifunctional surface that can be anything you want it to be. It’s an extra space to prepare and serve food and a highly functional workspace for family activities.

Make yours a smart kitchen

By linking up appliances, every type of activity can take place in the kitchen, from streaming movies to organising your family’s calendar.

Smart fridges now have screens that can be used to watch tv or act as a giant tablet packed with apps. Your fridge becomes an entertainment provider.

It’s also an ideal place to house shopping lists and calendars, helping your family stay organised. You can even have a fridge with internal cameras that allow you to view the inside from your smartphone. This is exceptionally handy if members of your family constantly raid the fridge without telling you what you’ve run out of.
